QUARK was founded in 1997 by Qfuzz, StereoQ and Qvoice. StereoQ, AKA
François Lardeau, sound engineer/musician/producer (Marc Ribot,
Depeche Mode) lives in Brooklyn. Qfuzz, AKA Eric Tong Cuong, plays
guitar and bass. Qvoice brings her lyrics and voice to Quark. She
also writes novels under the name of Valérie Tong Cuong. Some
influences : Can (StéréoQ), the Stooges, Joy Division,
Wire and Pet Sounds (Qfuzz), Serge Gainsbourg (Qvoice).

Quark's eponymous first album came out at the end of 1999. It was
welcomed with rave reviews in France and Spain, where it was cited
as one of the best albums of the year (El Païs).
Quark came back in 2001 with Manga, an album that radically reworked
five tracks from the first LP, plus four new tracks and their first
videoclip. New songs mixed some pure punk drum’n bass and hip
hop. The song « Je t’ai oublié »
was selected by Larry Clark for the soundtrack of his movie « Bully ».
Manga showed a more extraverted Quark, setting a new landmark for
the Brooklyn-Paris based outfit, as a capital prelude to the following
album.
Once again, the album was welcomed as a « parade
against the drive of orthodoxy » and as « the
birth of an important band ».
February 2003 saw the release of Sombre Extase (Gloomy Extasy), Quark’s
third album, recorded in Brooklyn. « Sombre Extase »
is Quark’s dark rock’n roll record.

la Slack" record.
